ABSTRACT
A large number of drugs have been demonstrated to effect platelet function and production .Even when shown to alter platelet function following ingestion of these drugs ,information on the effect of hematological parameter and the clinical significance is unavailable for many drugs. There is a lot of evidence in favour of significant changes in the activity of platelet function by vitamin E but results are controversial . The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of vitamin E on some of the hematological parameters which are index for platelet function.
A total of 10 healthy persons were chosen among laboratory science students who showed no evidence of disease. The cross-over method was used in this research All samples were treated with vitamin E (300IU/day) for 10 days. The platelet function test such as PTT,PT, bleeding time ,coagulation time ,clot retraction and platelet were measured before and again 5 and 10 days after vitamin E administration. Results are analysed by paired student t-test .A value of P<0.05 was considered to denote significant differences.
Our findings suggest that vitamin E therapy may change some hematological parameters which are related to dose and duration of administration. The platelet function decreased during 5 days but increased gradually after this time. We also observed a rise in platelet counts afte 10 days treatment with vitamin E.Changes in platelet function after long term vitamin E therapy are determined in this study .it must be established in future.
