ABSTRACT
The Purpose of this study is to compare the means of glucose area under the curve (AUC) before and after testosterone enanthate injection in men with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.
Oral glucose tolerance test was done in subjects selected before and after one week of testosterone injection and compared with control group.
20 men with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism referred to research center of metabolism and endocrinology of Isfahan and 20 men for control group.
The results obtained showed an increase in glucose area under the curve after testosterone administration (before: 652.5 ± 102.6 VS after: 748.9 ± 149.3 mmol/l; P Less than 0.02). We did'nt find a significant difference between glucose AUC in case and control groups. This study suggests that in men with hypogonadism glucose, AUC increases after treatment with testostrone

ABSTRACT
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common nerve entrapment syndrome. It affects women more than men. CTS occurs primarily idiopathically or secondary to other diseases.
A square wrist dimension is a risk factor for the development of CTS. This study is done for the evaluation of the relationship between the wrist ratio and CTS.
60 patients (54 females and 6 males) with idiopathic CTS were chosen as the patient group, The wrist thickness (A-P measurment) to width (M-L measurement) ratio was determined. 60 healthy persons with similar age, sex and occupation were selected as the control group.
The mean wrist ratio in the patient group was 0.734 and in the control group was 0.674 (P value < 0.001). 95% of the patients with CTS had wrist ratio between 0.72 - 0.78. As the wrist ratio approached 0.72, CTS was much more common. Statistical analysis showed that wrist ratio of 0.72 is the point beyond that, and the risk of CTS strongly increases.
At the end, determination of wrist ratio before employment, especially in women whose jobs require repeated wrist and hand activities is suggested.

ABSTRACT
Cotton dust is one of the chemical agents that cause air pollution in textile workshops. An investigation was done to measure cotton dust concentration in Mazandaran Province. 37 samples were collected by personal samplers devices and whatman filter papers of worker's inhalation zone of ambient air that contained total dust.
40 samples were collected by whatman filter papers and horizontal Hexlet devices of general ambient air that containdrespirable dust.
It was found that average complete dust concentration in all Mazandaran card workshops was 4.37 mg/m3 Maximum and minimum level of complete dust concentration were 10.24 and 1.22 mg/m3 respectively. Average of respirable dust concentration was 3.43 mg/m3 This value is 17 times more than TL V. Maximum and minimum respirable dust concentrations were 5.47 and 0.60 mg/m3 that is 27 and 3 times more than TLV respiectively.
It is also found out that approximately 78% pereent of dust is respirable dust.

ABSTRACT
Nervous system is high resistent, but is vulnerable and sensitive. Nervous system in cardiac surgery may be distracted due to hypoxia or embolism. The cardiac surgery developed in the last decades, and its complications require the necessary imformation for prophylaxia and treatment. This crosssectional prospective study has been done in in cardiac surgery section on about 500 patients that have undergone heart surgery in Shafa Medical Center of Kerman City in 1997.
Results include the following: total brain complications (clinical signs or symptoms of neurologic deficit) are 2.4% of all cases, for coronary bypass is 3.7% and for cardiac valve replacement surgery is 3.35%.
Convulsion is seen in 1% of all cases, but these cases are mostly cardiac valve replacement. Hemiplegia is seen in 0.8% of all cases, but these cases are coronary bypass and cardiac valve replacement
Nonreversible coma is seen in 1% of all cases, but mostly in the coronary bypass surgery. Mortality rate is 6.2% in all cases, but for congenital heart disorders is 7.5%, cardiac valve replacement is 4.46% and for coronary bypass is 6.6%. Mortality of coronary bypass for female is 15.62%, for male 3.8%, and female to male ratio is 4. Death in coronary bypass surgery group is for cases of tree- vessel graft. The increase of age in patients with congenital heart disorders surgery cause the decreased mortality rate (PV= 0.027).

ABSTRACT
Thyroid gland is involved in several diseases, and somtimes surgical intervention is necessary. Metabolic complication of thyroidectomy are hypothyroidism, hypoparathyroidism, and hyperthyroidism. In a retrospective study we investigate the prevalance of the three complications in 638 consecutive patients of a private endocrinologic clinic in Rasht. All thyroidectomized patients with at least two follow-up visits were included in this study. Mean postthyroidectomy follow-up duration was 7.5 years. During follow-up hypothyroidism occurred in 198 patients (31.3%), Hypoparathyroidism in 33 patients (5.2%), and hyperthyroidism in 35 cases (5.5%).
In conclusion, the prevalance of hypothyroidism in thyroidectomized patients is high; it is similar to other reports. The prevalance of hypoparathyroidism is significantly high; it is more than the acceptable ranges mentioned in the textsbooks. The prevalance of hyperthyoidism in thyroidectomized is similar to other reports. Due to morbidity amd mortality of the three complication, lifetime regular and close follow-up of all thyroidectomized patiens is necessary.

ABSTRACT
Coronary artety disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death in most developed countries, Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the most common cause of death in Iran. The data from the Framingham heart study and other iarge scale epidemiologic studies have identified major risk factors associated with CAD, demonstrating the adverse effects of increased total and low-density lipoprotein- cholestrol levels and the protective effect of highdensity lipoprotein cholestrol.
In this study, the effect of magnesium- enriched diets on the various plasma levels of cholestrol has been investigated. 40 rabbits divided in 4 groups were fed as follows:
1. Normal diet
2. Normak diet + 1. 67% Mg (OH)2
3. Normal diet + 2% cholestrol
4. Normal diet + 2% cholestrol + 1.67/ Mg (OH)2
The levels of plasma lipids were measured at the beginning and at the end of 4th and 8th weeks of the study. The results obtained according to ANOVA show that Mg can decrease total cholestrol and LDL-cholestrol significantly in the rabbits fed with high cholestrol diets (P 0.05) but this effect is not seen in both groups taking either normal or high cholstrol diets and increases HDL-cholestrol (P 0.05). The importance of HDL-cholestrol in the protection of cardiovascular system and the related effect of Mg in this field necessitates further study on animal models to evaluate the possibility of indication of Mg- enriched diets in man.

Air Stripping of Volatile Organic Compounds from Contaminated Water By Packed Tower Aeration

ABSTRACT
Nowadays, removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from drinking water specially from ground water resources, is considered as a very important act. Many reports have shown the contamination of water resources by these chemicals.
Two common method to reduce the concentration of VOCs are air stripping and GAC absorption. Of course, it is necessary to perform pilot study before using the air stripping as the method of choice for the removal of encountered contamination.
This paper described air stripping of VOCs and provided an overview of the feasibility of a packed column aeration designed in removing toluen from water. The packed column had 100cm height and 19 cm diameter.
Efficiency of this reactor in stripping of toluen has been studied under different conditions of temperature and air to water ratios.
The results of this study indicate that removal officiencies for toluen will increase over 90 percent if air/water ratio reaches 60 or more, but increasing air/watcr ratio over 70 have not significant effect on removal efficiency in this condition (height + of packing = 100cm). Camparison of toluen Henry law's constant with many of trihalometans (chloroform), chlorinated organic compounds (TCE), pesticides (Toxaphen), indicate that these compounds are treatable by this method (PTA).

ABSTRACT
Propolis or bee glue is a production of hive with resine nature which had been known from ancient times and was used in treatment of infectious disease. At present time it is still widely used in the eastern parts of Europe. The use of propolis for its antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and certain other useful pharmacologic effects is increasing. Because of difference between the sort of propolis from various countries, we decided to investigate the propolis of a specific part of Iran. To do this, the antibacterial effect of Borougerd city propolis was evaluated. In this study, ethanol (70%), methanol and chloroform extracted from propolis on the concentrations of 30, 20, 10, 5, 2.5 and 1.25% W/V were prepared by digestion method. Paper disk method was used for evaluation of the antibacterial effect of the extracts because of the advantages claimed for this method. To prepare the disk, ten microliter of the above mentioned concentrations were added to the blank disks, so after drying. the disks contained 3, 2, 1, 0.25 and 0.125 miligram of each extract. The effect of the extracts were then investigated on the S. aureus, Strep, pyogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Sal. typhi and proteus vulgaris cultured on muller- Hinton agar. The inhibition zones produced by the disks were assessed after 18 to 24 hours. According to the results obtained, it was concluded that only S. aureus and Strep. pyogenes arc sensitive to the propolis extract and other strains of the bacteria are resistant to it. It was also shown that propolis extracts in the above mentioned concentrations have inhibitory effect on the growth of the sensitive bacteria. There was not any significant difference betwecn ethanol, methanol or chloroform extracts, so it suggests that the extracting solvent does not have any influence on the antibacterial effect. For statistical evaluation, analysis of variance and tukey tests were used.

ABSTRACT
This search is a correlation coefficient study. Our purpose was to study the relation between awareness rate of the marriageable girls about rubella and prevention from it, with their readiness for vaccination against this dicases.
The specific objectives of this study were determined. Some of the individuals represent the awareness and readiness rate to action and relation between this variables together and with individual characteristics. In this study, random sampling method was used, and 230 girls who were going to get married, were selected and referred to health center for doing premarriage test in Guilan . For data collection,a questioniare with 33 open question was prepared that was regulated in 3 sections: Nine questions were related to individual characteristics, sixteen questions about awareness rate and eight about the readiness to action rate. Descriptive and inferential statistics are used for data analysis. Results showed that mean age was 22 years and the majority of samples were housewives with guidance education.
60% had previous information about rubella that %42/76 were by personal studies, 31/74 were affected by rubella and %29/56 were vaccinated against this disease but %67/65 hadn't documented instances. These findings also showed that only %7/38 of samples gained good level of awareness and %51/3 have mean score. %76/96 of them imagined that rubella is only childhood diseases and did'nt know its symptoms, %66/52 thought that vaccination in childhood is the best way for immunity. %98/26 tended that their immunity was determined and %70/43 were ready for vaccination by one way or another even in private centers, and in %29/57 of mothers, the most important reason of their reluctance was fear of vaccine complications. Also variables such as age, education, occupation, residence, previous information and pervious vaccination with awareness and readiness to action rate persisted correlation. Results showed that between two variables of awareness and readiness to action rate, Direct correlation (=%19) was present, although this quantity was small but all persons with good awarness, have high readiness to acquire, too. Thus theory and total objective of study is approved.
