ABSTRACT
Thyroid gland is involved in several diseases, and somtimes surgical intervention is necessary. Metabolic complication of thyroidectomy are hypothyroidism, hypoparathyroidism, and hyperthyroidism. In a retrospective study we investigate the prevalance of the three complications in 638 consecutive patients of a private endocrinologic clinic in Rasht. All thyroidectomized patients with at least two follow-up visits were included in this study. Mean postthyroidectomy follow-up duration was 7.5 years. During follow-up hypothyroidism occurred in 198 patients (31.3%), Hypoparathyroidism in 33 patients (5.2%), and hyperthyroidism in 35 cases (5.5%).
In conclusion, the prevalance of hypothyroidism in thyroidectomized patients is high; it is similar to other reports. The prevalance of hypoparathyroidism is significantly high; it is more than the acceptable ranges mentioned in the textsbooks. The prevalance of hyperthyoidism in thyroidectomized is similar to other reports. Due to morbidity amd mortality of the three complication, lifetime regular and close follow-up of all thyroidectomized patiens is necessary.
