Background: Obesity is an important factor for cause lower limb musculoskeletal disorders. In other hand, flat feet (pronated feet) may be associated with different lower limb injuries.
Objective: Therefore, the aim of the present study was to compare the general and directed co-contraction values of lower limb muscles in individuals with both obesity and flat feet (pronated feet) versus healthy ones during walking.
Methods: This study involved 15 adult males with both obesity and flat feet (pronated feet) and 16 healthy ones. Directed and general co-contraction of ankle joint muscles were recorded using a electromyography device during barefoot walking. Independent sample t-test was used to compare the two groups using SPSS version 27 software.
Results: The results showed a significant difference in general (P=0.001, d=0.30) and directed (P=0.044, d=0.24) ankle joint co-contraction during walking stance phase. Also, paired-wise comparison demonstrated significantly greater general and directed co- ankle joint contraction during stance phase in individuals with both obesity and flat feet compared with the healthy group.
Conclusion: Increased co-contraction during walking in individuals with flat feet (pronated feet), might be an adaptive strategy to increase walking stability, as it may be related to obesity, nonetheless could result in a high metabolic cost. The information obtained in this study may be used to support rehabilitation programs such as corrective or power training.
