Background: Fertility is known as a social right and fertility intention is the strongest predictor of fertility behavior in women.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to explain, design, and psychometrically evaluate factors affecting women’s fertility and behavioral intention scale.
Methods: This methodological research was conducted in two parts, qualitative and quantitative. In the qualitative part, to explain the concept of fertility and behavior intention to develop the items of women's fertility intention and behavior scale, a semi-structured individual interview was conducted with 23 married women of reproductive age and 5 interviews with key informants. Sampling was done based on the purpose and with the maximum variety of participants. In the quantitative part, content validity, face validity, construct validity (factor analysis), criterion validity internal consistency, and instrument stability were investigated.
Results: The scale of evaluation of a women's fertility and behavior Intention was designed in 4 areas (physical factors, psycho-emotional factors, social factors, and cultural factors) and 28 items. The index of content validity (0.92), and construct validity (0.813) were obtained. The results of the criterion validity of the designed scale showed a correlation between the scores of the factors affecting women’s fertility and behavioral intention scale with the tool of components influencing the intention to have children (r = -0.67, p < 0.001).
Conclusion: The designed scale is valid, reliable, and to the cultural conditions of Iranian society, to evaluate the factors affecting the fertility intention and behavior of married women of reproductive age.
