Background Drowning is a common and preventable cause of injury and death in children. This study aims to determine the regional burden of drowning among children in Guilan province, north of Iran, during 2017-2021.
Objective This is a descriptive and retrospective study. The data of children under 15 years of age who experienced drowning events (fatal and non-fatal) in Guilan province during 2017-2021 were extracted using a checklist and analyzed using the autoregressive moving average (ARMA) time series model.
Results During the five-year study period, 106 cases of fatal and non-fatal drowning in children were identified, including 71 boys (67%) and 35 girls (30%), mostly aged 11-15 years (54.7%). Most drowning accidents occurred in the summertime months, from 12:00 to 20:00 (56.6%), and in the sea (66%) or rivers (11.3%). Based on the ARMA model, decreasing trends were observed in the number of drowning deaths during 2017-2021.
Conclusion The high prevalence of drowning in children aged 11-15 years, mostly occurred in the sea, highlights the need for increasing the number of lifeguards on beaches and their continuous training. The development of pre-hospital emergency centers on beaches and natural water environments is also essential in Gilan province.
