Background: Depression is a common and disabling problem among older adults that affects their daily life and independence. Because of the increasing number of elderly people and barriers such as social stigma, mobility limitation, high costs, and lack of specialized mental health services, access to effective care remains difficult for older adults.
Objective: This narrative review aimed to examine the effectiveness of digital health interventions on depressive symptoms in older adults.
Methods: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for studies published between January 2020 and December 2024. Only randomized clinical trials and systematic reviews were included. The quality of the studies was checked using standard tools, and the data was analyzed descriptively.
Results: Out of the 38 articles reviewed, met the inclusion criteria. The results indicated that telephone counseling, mobile apps, video-based consultations, and virtual reality were all effective in reducing depressive symptoms in older adults. Mobile apps and video-based consultations showed the greatest effectiveness.
Conclusion: Digital health interventions can improve access to care and quality of life for older adults. Developing technological infrastructure, improving digital health literacy, and adapting therapeutic tools to local needs are important for increasing the effectiveness of these interventions.
