In the last decade, the world has faced a new phenomenon called social media or social networks, which provide easy and low-cost communication between people from different groups and countries [1]. The high tendency to spend time online in social media is a global phenomenon that has had a profound impact on society, culture and experiences and has created new spaces for the growth of cultures and micro-cultures [2]. Online communities are new places to conduct research that provide a rich source of data in a timely manner with textual interactions [3]. Nursing research has emphasized the important role of social media in discussing health and disease-related issues, and many studies have shown how people discuss mental health issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression in online groups and social media [4، 5]. Netnography is a qualitative research method based on the principles of ethnographic observation [6] to understand the attitudes, perceptions, imaginations, and feelings of users in online groups [7]. This method was pioneered by Kozinets [8]. According to him, netnography is either a conceptual lens or a set of practical and culturally-embedded qualitative research methods, and is used when data is mainly from publicly available content shared on the Internet [9]. As a conceptual lens, netnography includes three assumptions: a) The online context is a fluid, decentralized and unbounded terrain; b) Individuals who participate in online social experiences function as connected members of society; c) Culture and cultural practices are mentally constructed and destabilized patterns adapted by humans to their lives and assumed as having a real existence for people who use the Internet, and thus have the capacity to produce human and system-level effects” [9]. The number of netnographic studies in nursing has increased due to the increased use of online interaction and digital transformation in the last two decades, but ethical challenges have been raised regarding the anonymity and protection of participant data [2]. A study by Smith et al. in 2023 aimed to critically reflect on their team’s experience of using netnography to discover parents and pregnant women who are hesitant about vaccines. Their results suggested that netnography is a creative method that was successful in reaching and engaging with the vaccine-hesitant community, a group that is often marginalized [10]. Also, this method has successfully been used in training nurses [11]. Netnography as a research method provides great opportunities for nurse scholars to monitor new spaces and places that require online methodological knowledge and its use in nursing science is strongly recommended.
