Introduction: Today, nurse turnover is one of the major challenges in the health system. Leadership behaviors seem to be one of the influential factors in nurse turnover.
Objective: To explain the influential verbal and nonverbal behaviors of clinical leaders in nurse turnover.
 Method: The present study is qualitative and based on the opinions of Fairclough and Van Leeuwen 's critical discourse analysis and Hymes's context-based characteristics, describing, interpreting, and explaining the discursive structures in the verbal and nonverbal behaviors of clinical leaders.
Data Collection: participants were clinical leaders and nurses working in hospitals in Guilan province who were selected using purposive judgment sampling. Data collection continued using semi-structured interviews.
Findings: Key indicators of behaviors affecting nurses' turnover included: lack of empathy, negative solidarity, disregard for competence, unworthiness, punitive actions, vengeful actions, absolute determinism, etc., which play an important role in nurses' turnover.
 Conclusion: Based on the results, the choice of discourse and the effectiveness of clinical leaders' words in a situational context play a decisive role in the formation of nurses' mindset and decision-making regarding the work environment, having positive or negative effect on their decision to leave the service. Therefore, adopting approaches to increase clinical leaders' performance and awareness of communication skills can be an effective step towards preventing nurses from leaving the service and desertion.
