Introduction: Emergency surgeries play a critical role in healthcare, and the periodic measurement and analysis of hospital statistics can provide valuable insights for policymaking and quality improvement. In this study, we aimed to assess the frequency of emergency surgeries and associated factors in patients admitted to the general surgery department.
Methods and Materials: This analytical cross-sectional study was approved by the University Research Committee. Patient data, including demographics, type of surgery, and surgical complications, were collected from the hospital’s information system.
Results: The study included patients with an average age of 16.511 ± 40.41. Most surgical complications observed in > 90% of the patients were classified as grade 1 or 2 complications.
Conclusion: In recent years, the rate of non-traumatic emergency surgery has declined. Gastrointestinal surgeries, such as appendectomy, colorectal surgery, cholecystectomy, and hernia repair, were the most common types of emergency surgeries observed in this study. Considering the financial burden and complications associated with these surgeries, identifying the factors contributing to complications and prolonged hospital stays can aid healthcare decision making and planning. The type of surgery performed is a significant factor associated with complications and the length of hospitalization.
