Introduction
An organization, akin to a human being, can be healthy or sick. A healthy organization operates in a functional, regular, and effective way and provides a product or service [3]. If the organization becomes sick, its members and the community would get sick as well. Having a healthy society is not possible without healthy organizations as the pulse of community health depends on the health of organizations [4]. Sick organizations will have negative functional effects on their employees and then on its client and the customers who will be accompanied by their dissatisfaction that can show itself.
Looking at the situation of many societies and observing the existing problems and dilemmas, it can be maintained that many organizations in these societies are weak and inefficient; in other words, in organizational psychology, they are sick and are considered neurotic organizations. We should know just as humans get sick, organizations get sick as well, and just as viruses attack humans and computers, organizations get viruses of their kind. With sick organizations, many problems in society cannot be solved [5]. While examining organizational trauma and its relationship with employee skills, Kolivand and Sarlak (2015) explained the negative effects of organizational trauma on employee skills [8].
Venogopal (2016) in his research, “Understanding Organizational Trauma, Reviewing the History, Causes, and Types of Traumas,” implicitly examines the trauma and shocks to organizations. In this research, while distinguishing from previous studies that classify trauma in organizations, Venogopal deals with the concept of trauma with the approach of identifying the factors to prevent shock injuries to companies [9]. In Arman’s (2014) research, the function of conceptual metaphor in the field of organization has been studied and the research aims to increase our understanding of the role of death metaphor in organizations that are exposed to liquidation or closure of a factory [10].
Methods
This is a fundamental study from the perspective of qualitative research with a qualitative research approach. The qualitative methods used in this research are content analysis and theme analysis. The theme is the most abstract level of the data whose formation and selection depend on the research structures [8]. The scope of this research is Guilan University of Medical Sciences and its affiliated organizations. To obtain the data, in-depth interviews were conducted with several scholars of the University of Medical Sciences. In this regard, several faculty members were interviewed and purposeful sampling was used to identify the research community. These interviews continued until saturation; that is, the interviews continued until the extracted codes in the form of selected statements from the interview appeared repetitive, which occurred after the tenth interview.
Results
Considering that the Max QUDE software was used for data analysis, after careful and repeated examination of the interviews, 206 initial codes were extracted, which were finally approved after merging and removing duplicate codes (180 codes), which are open codes in research. According to the interviews conducted with the scholars of the University of Medical Sciences, the overall result of the research on the study of the organization was examined from 3 dimensions: the diseases of the organization, the metaphor of the living organization, and the challenges and problems of the organization. The following are total diseases mentioned in this study:
• Physical diseases;
• Physical and mental illness;
• Mental illness.
Discussion
This study aimed to identify human diseases and generalize them to the organization. Through qualitative methods and content analysis during interviews with scholars of the University of Medical Sciences, the data were analyzed and some human diseases that can be generalized to the organization were identified. In response to the first question of the study which examines the symptoms of the sick organization, some diseases of the organization were identified, including organizational trauma, posttraumatic stress, organizational asthma, vascular occlusion, organizational septic, organizational indifference, and some mental illnesses that we will implicitly examine the symptoms of some diseases. One of the important applications for using medical metaphors to identify the problems and challenges of an organization is to know many diseases in people’s minds; therefore, by using the name of human diseases and generalizing them to the organization, we can first understand the importance of the challenges of organizations that are justified to be understood more and shift the focus of senior managers of organizations on the organization and its issues. On the other hand, one of the subgoals of this generalizability is to identify the disease in the organization before its development and spread and to take the issue of pathology seriously in the organization. As pathology units in medical laboratories determine the type of complication and the extent of disease development, the presence of a pathology team in the organization seems to exist, especially when the organization faces many challenges in its various dimensions, including structure, strategy, human capital, and technology. Therefore, by identifying the symptoms of the patient’s organization and its treatment, it is possible to prevent the development of the disease in the organization and reduce the adverse effects of these diseases on staff, especially nurses in the treatment department. Hence, maintaining organizational health, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic is one of the main priorities that should be given special attention by officials and policymakers.
